<Sentence _locID="30">If the computer recognizes further as father</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="31">do not say "Select father"</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="32">followed by saying "Further".</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="33">Instead, just say "Correct father".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="34">You will probably see the word you want in the list that appears.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="35">If you don't see the word in the list, just speak the word again.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="36">If you still can't see the word after you say it again,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="37">you can say "Spell it".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="38">The spelling dialog is very efficient and powerful.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="39">You can say "A as in apple" or "A as in Adam".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="40">You can also say "three" to edit letter three,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="41">or you can say "Delete" to delete the current letter,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="42">and you can say "Insert" to insert a letter.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="43">Just say "OK", when you get the word you want.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="44">The computer will learn from the correction.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="45">The computer will be unlikely to make the same dictation mistake again.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="46">Another way to improve your dictation experience is to learn advanced commands.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="47">If there are two instances of the word "apple" in the document,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="48">and you say "Select apple",</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="49">you will see that each instance of the word "apple" has a box over it.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="50">To select the word you want, say the number of the word, followed by "OK".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="51">If a menu appears and you want to get rid of it,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="52">simply say "Cancel" to dismiss the menu.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="53">To scroll down the page in a document, just say "Scroll down".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="54">If you don't know the name of the program you want to switch to</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="55">just say "Switch application".</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="56">You can then choose the one you want from the list on the screen.</Sentence>

  <Chapter Type="Continuous" ID="{????}" Audience="Adult" _locID="0" Title="Speech Recognition Background information">
<Sentence _locID="1">Speech is the main way people bond and learn from each other.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="2">The way we speak affects the way we communicate with each other</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="3">on the telephone, in movies, and on radio, television, and the Internet.</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="4">Supported by the mouse and keyboard,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="5">speech is slowly becoming one of the primary ways we interact with computers.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="6">The technology that allows us to control computers via speech is still very new,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="7">especially when you consider that</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="8">the ultimate goal of speech recognition technology</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="9">is to make talking to a computer as natural as</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="10">talking to another human being.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="11">This requires the computer to both be able to understand human speech,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="12">and to simulate human speech.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="13">Understanding human speech is called speech recognition.</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="14">Simulating human speech is called text-to-speech conversion.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="15">When people first started making speech recognition software,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="16">they designed it to take large numbers of incoming phone calls.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="17">This was a good place to start, because recognizing the caller’s speech meant</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="18">recognizing only a few different responses,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="19">each suggested by the software.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="20">Text to speech conversion also worked well in telephone systems.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="21">The system usually only had to simulate short, precise phrases.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="22">Short and precise phrases are easier to pronounce</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="23">for text to speech conversion systems.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="24">Personal computers are now beginning to do a good job for speech recognition</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="25">and text to speech conversion.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="26">Personal computers allow users to complete a wide variety of tasks.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="27">But for all their virtues, computers understand speech differently than human beings.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="28">Computers understand words by analyzing sound waves,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="29">and they understand sentences by judging how likely it is</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="30">that certain words will appear next to each other.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="31">The more different things a computer has to listen for,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="32">the harder it is to accurately recognize what a person might say.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="33">On the telephone, a caller is expected to respond to a prompt</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="34">with concise information.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="35">In this case, the software usually knows exactly what to listen for,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="36">such as an account number,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="37">a zip code, or a departure city.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="38">Using a computer, people can do many things at any given time.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="39">We can even do many things simultaneously.</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="40">We can chat with a friend</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="41">and read a news article at the same time.</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="42">Since the software doesn't know what we're doing or what we'll do next,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="43">it has to assume that we might say just about anything at any given time.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="44">This challenge becomes even more complicated when people dictate to the computer.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="45">The computer has to be ready to recognize anything we might say</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="46">even if it has nothing to do with what we just said,</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="47">or we're not dictating but still talking.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="48">Personal computers handle this problem by dividing what a user might say</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="49">into commands and dictation.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="50">The computer limits the number of commands we can speak at any given time.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="51">The computer listens only for a small set of commands</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="52">that can apply to what we're doing.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="53">When we're working on something that allows us to dictate text,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="54">the computer still tries to interpret what we say as a command.</Sentence>
    <Sentence _locID="55">If the computer doesn't recognize what we say as a command,</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="56">it will interpret the speech as dictation.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="57">The computer then enters this dictation into the current program as text.</Sentence>
<Sentence _locID="58">This concludes the Speech Recognition Background Information training session.</Sentence>
